What penalty should be given to cops who coerce false confessions, and the DAs who use them in court?

The death penalty? Life without parole?

This seems like one of the single crimes things a law enforcement or prosecutorial official can commit - it's a crime against all of society. It's an insult to the rule of law. What penalty should be given to cops who coerce false confessions, and the DAs who use them in court?
This is a very serious issue. See books such as ';Convicting the Innocence'; and even ';Busted by the Feds.'; The Innocence Project has dealt with many cases where convictions were obtained with false confessions: http://www.innocenceproject.org/

Additionally, we all probably remember the ';Wilding'; or ';Central Park Five'; case of 1989: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trisha_Meili

Generally, the punishment ought to be commensurate with the crime. That said, as a practical matter, if you or someone you know has made a false confession to police or has otherwise been the victim of coercion, contact a good attorney right away. What penalty should be given to cops who coerce false confessions, and the DAs who use them in court?
It depends, I have less problems with pressure being applied to try and get a confession or information out of a suspect if the guilt is still unknown, but if the cops know who did it and then force false confessions, plant evidence, then they should lose their job and pension and if the person is harmed or killed in prison then they should be prosecuted as the direct cause of his being in prison.

whale
Far more than currently happens.

In the 300+ cases of wrongful convictions on the ';Innocence Project'; home page, nearly 200 were at least partly caused by deliberate police and/or prosecutorial misconduct. In not ONE of those 200 cases was a cop or DA meaningfully punished.

Richard
If a person is sent to prison because the prosecution knowingly provided false evidence or testimony, and it can proved,,,than justice would be for the prosecutor on the case to serve the sentence instead.
They should be fired, and banned from further law enforcement positions. Period. End of Sentence.
Depends what you mean by ';coerce';. If it is just being tough on them then nothing.
death. ****** pigs.
