The Supreme Court appointments are important. (That part of your statement is True.)
They do not have to represent the will of the people. Supreme Court appointment are Constitutionally reserved to the President. However, they must be approved by the Senate. It becomes sticky when a Republican President is trying to appoint a Justice that will pass muster with a Democratic Senate.
