The real prize of the next election will be an opening on the Supreme Court. True or false?

87 year olds don't live forever. The real prize of the next election will be an opening on the Supreme Court. True or false?
John Paul Stevens, an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court, was born in 1920. Appointed by Ford in 1975.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg, An Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, was born in 1933. Appointed by Clinton

These are the two oldest Justices. It appears that one at least may leave the bench in this next term of office. Both are Liberals.

It would be a very big prize for whoever gets into office. As it stands now, we do have a Conservative majority.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious! :)

Absolutely true.

John Paul Stevens is 87. Scalia, Kennedy, and Ginsburg are all in their 70s.

I would be willing to bet most of the farm that the next president will have at least one and maybe more appointments to the SC in their 1st term.

The SCOTUS has an incredible impact on social issues. The most likely retirement would be Stevens, who is a social liberal.

If a republican is elected president and appoints a conservative, the Court tips firmly to the right and Roe v. Wade comes into jeopardy.

If a democrat is elected president and appoints a liberal, the Court maintains an uneasy balance and Roe v. Wade is likely safe.

In terms of real and lasting impact on the nation, there is nothing more significant that a SC appointment. They don't come any bigger.
It has been the prize of the last few and will continue to be until the older judges retire. Many are just waiting for Bush to leave(ie Stephens, Ginsburg, Kennedy) as they have seen the radicals he has appointed

Bush's appointees have begun rolling back the 4th Amendment and giving free reign to corporations. In one day they said you cannot limit corporate donations as ';you must always err on the side of free speech'; and then said a high school student could not wear a ';Bong Hits for Jesus'; shirt off campus and it might ';be damaging.'; Scalia and Thomas have also said there ';is no Constitutional right to privacy. So Rep apparently believe Corporations should have every freedom but we the people deserve only what they allow.

Stop this madness. Vote Democratic, please!

Edit: Stevens is OLD and Ginsburg had cancer in 1999-2000 and it is no secret that she is wanting to retire. Both have privately said that they are waiting until the next administration to retire and will almost definitely do so.

Also notice that Bush is appointing very young justices so they will be on the court for 30+ years.

Moody- Both Stevens and Ginsberg are considered liberals. In fact they are the 2 most liberal justices.
We still have year.Who knows Gods plans? He hate's Roe/wade.Notice Bush had two appointments. If you ask me that was the hand of God.
True. If a Republican wins, the Court will shift solidly right for decades. If a Democrat wins, some level of balance can be maintained. Ginsburg may also retire if a Democrat wins, allowing that seat to remain as it is for a while. In addition, if a Democrat wins and then gets re-elected, Scalia's seat may come up during that term.
Without a lot of research, I'm going to say ';false';. While 87 year olds do not live forever, most of the appointees to the court are fairly recent. Therefore, I don't see a lot of nominations for the next President.
True. It would be a real prize for the social conservatives. At long last, they could get Roe v. Wade reversed. If a Democrat is elected President, one appointment would not change the court that much. The court would probably keep the status quo on abortion. The moderate and liberal judges would not have a consistent majority to restore our rights and our justice system to where they were in 2000.
I can see where both sides would think it would be a boon. In the case of Democrats to maintain a balance. In the case of Republicans to gain an advantage. Frankly after the Kelo decision what little faith I had left in the court was erased. I don't believe there are strict Constitutionalists left seeking appointment to the court. Judges are now making law from the bench rather than interpreting it and possess absolute power to a disturbing degree. In short, no matter who has the power in the court, certain sectors of the populace will suffer. Private property rights have been seriously damaged. It just leaves me wondering what is next on the hit list to be spawned from the unholy alliance between government and big business.
